Universal is a huge company; a conglomerate that is diversified and they own a lot in the film, music and TV industry.


  • Diversified - have music, theme parks and films.
  • A conglomerate is one company that controls the market, the also own many subsidiary companies. Universal own Virgin EMI Records and many other smaller record companies. This reinforces that they are a conglomerate.
  • Oligopoly - market is shared between many small companies who own a large percentage of the industry. This is the BIG THREE; Universal Studios, Sony Music and Warner Music Group. These three companies dominate the market.
  • Universal has made $7 billion in revenue in 2017.

  • Artists signed - Robbie Williams, Sting, 50 Cent, Amy Winehouse, ABBA, Queen, One Direction, Lorde, Coldplay, Martin Garrix, Maroon 5, Lana Del Ray, Imagine Dragons, Elton John, Adele, Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Rihanna, Prince, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, Kayne West and Avicii.
  • Genre - Universal do not specialise in a genre. They have a wide range spread across their artists. This reinforces the power they have in the music industry.
